Western Manitoba Overview

  • Virden Manitoba, located west of Brandon, is home to Manitoba’s main oilfield. You can view the pump-jacks at work from the highway.
  • The Souris Hillcrest Museum depicts the history of the Souris area, with settler artifacts and historical items.
  • The Moncur Gallery in Boissevain displays Native American artifacts such as weapons and arrow-heads, proving that this region was inhabited as far back as 10,000 BC!
  • The sand dunes in Spruce Woods Provincial Park can reach up to 30 m (98 ft) high.
  • Riding Mountain National Park was home to a man named Grey Owl who lived in isolation, and raised and cared for beavers and other endangered animals. After giving presentations and shows with his two pet beavers, Rawhide and Jellyroll, for years and becoming famous, it was revealed that he was actually an Englishman impersonating an Aboriginal man.
  • Riding Mountain National Park is home to one of the last free-ranging bison herds in the west.
