Just a short drive west of Winnipeg is the friendly town of Portage la Prairie, or Portage for short. The Fort La Reine Museum and Pioneer Village is a replica of the original built in 1738 by a French Canadian explorer, La Verendrye. The museum features a blacksmith shop, stable, schoolhouse, church, and other attractions - all as they would appear in the 18th Century. Island Park and Crescent Lake are scenic, and one can drive around its perimeter and stop at picnic areas, pet animals, and even golf.

Nearby Delta Marsh is a wildlife habitat protected by the government, where scholars conduct extensive research, as it is one of the most significant natural waterfowl areas in the world.
