In the late 17th Century, the Hudson's Bay Company established York Factory as a major trading post for furs and other goods. It was the original gateway to the Interior for explorers and settlers. Like Churchill, transportation to York Factory is only possible by way of aircraft, and interestingly, there is no community at York Factory, nor are there stores or services. The three-week canoe trip from Norway House via the Hayes River to York Factory is popular, although canoers are advised to plan their accommodations carefully, as camping is illegal because of the danger of local polar bears.
