Named after Thomas Douglas, the fifth Earl of Selkirk who relocated hundreds of Scottish and Irish settlers to the shore of the Red River, this town is steeped in the rich fur trade history of the region. Lower Fort Garry was created because of flooding and economic problems at Fort Garry (in Winnipeg).

Today, stone buildings, and guides in period costume greet visitors in a convincing 1850s atmosphere. Selkirk has one of two operating lift bridges in North America, as well as the Marine Museum of Manitoba with six former lake vessels open for exploration.
